Collagen in the dermis of the skin is made up of fibers of protein that, along with elastin, give strength, support, and resilience to the skin. The process of collagen buildup stops at the age of 30. The fibers break up and decrease in numbers. This along with the facial muscles, sun damage, and years of tobacco abuse, if any, all get-together and contribute to the wrinkle formation.
The wrinkles are nothing wrong, and some people celebrate their wrinkles as evidence of life filled full. But probably no one celebrates her wrinkles, but some people don’t mind wrinkles and they never bother to spend money on getting them smoothed out while some people desire to get rid of their wrinkles at the earliest.
In addition to certain modifications of lifestyles like keeping away the sun and not smoking, there are a number of non-invasive treatments for wrinkles that include laser, chemical peeling, tissue filler injections, and injecting of botulinum toxin which is commonly known as botox.
The wrinkles are best treated with botulinum injections that appear on the formation of facial expressions like a smile or a frown. But the static wrinkles remain when the face is relaxed and constant and are best treated by a combination of botulinum toxin and dermal fillers. They are also generally treated by chemical peels, microdermabrasion, radiofrequency micro-needling, and laser resurfacing.
Given hereunder are 7 different facial wrinkles treated by injection with botulinum toxin
GLABELLAR LINES
The treatment of the glabellar lines is the most common use of botulinum toxin. The glabella is the patch of skin between the eyebrows and above the nose.
CROWS FEET
These are the wrinkles that branch out from the edge of the eyes and spread like a crow’s feet, they become more prominent when the person is smiling or laughing. The crow’s feet could be static or nonstatic and can occur or be permanent with or without smiling. They are the second most common type of wrinkles that are being treated by botox cosmetics, which work beautifully with the dynamic wrinkles in the area.
FOREHEAD WRINKLES
The large facial muscle of the forehead is called the frontalis muscle. When the frontalis muscle contracts and the brow rises then the forehead lines appear.
BUNNY LINES
Bunny lines occur on the bridge of the nose. They become more prominent after the botulinum toxin treatment for the glabellar lines or the crow’s feet. Hence, persons who undergo botox treatment for glabellar lines or crow’s feet often return to the doctor for the treatment of bunny lines.
LIPSTICK LINES
Perioral or lipstick lines are the vertical wrinkles above the upper lips. The formation of the lipstick wrinkles is likely multifactorial and photoaging, hereditary factors, puckering and smoking all contribute.
MARIONETTE LINES
These are the lines that originate from the corners of the mouth and dip down towards the chin. These lines resemble the borders of the jaw segment of a marionette. These lines are treated both with botulinum toxin and dermal fillers.
CHIN DIMPLING
The chin dimpling gives the skin an orange peel look. With the treatment of the marionette lines, smoothing chin dimples often require both botulinum toxin and dermal fillers.
Most of the people who have received treatment from the botulinum toxin or other botox injections are pretty happy and satisfied with the outcome and are ready to purchase more such injections. But the fact is that the treatment with these injections is temporary and lasts only about 120 days.
However, as with the medical treatments, botox treatment carries with it a set of complications and after-effects along with side effects. It includes the swelling of muscles, weakness, and pain.
If you are interested in botox, please make an appointment with one of our Oral Surgeons for an evaluation and to discuss the options.
