Dry hair can be incredibly frustrating, but with just a few simple hair care products, you can battle brittle ends, fight frizz, banish breakage, and dial up dull colour. Whether your hair is dry from roots to the tips, or you need advice on how to S.O.S (save our split-ends), these hair care products and tips will help to ensure your hair is happy and healthy for longer.
Oil Up
The opposite problem to oily hair is dry hair, so it would make sense that the solution to dry hair is to add oil. Oils such as macadamia, argan, coconut, and jojoba are the best hair care products for dry hair, and when you add a few essential oils like tea tree or rosemary, your hair will feel better in no time at all. Before you wash your hair, mix your oil treatment and apply generously to your hair including the scalp. You should leave it for at least an hour, however, you can leave it in overnight. There are also some hot oil hair care products on the market which are even more effective. You can also do it yourself by heating ½ a cup of olive oil (don’t boil it). Rub the warmed oil into your hair and cover your hair with a plastic bag before wrapping in a towel. Keep the oil in your hair for 45 minutes or so, before rinsing and shampooing as normal. You can help keep the natural oil in your hair by not washing it everyday. If you find your scalp gets a bit oily or greasy, simply invest in a good quality dry shampoo. When your hair is dry, sandalwood, olive, or jojoba oil can also be rubbed into the ends of your hair to help curb dry hair during the day.
Be Gentle with Shampoo
As we just mentioned, you shouldn’t wash your hair every day, in fact you shouldn’t wash your hair more than 3 times a week, as excessive washing can strip away the sebum that nourishes and protects your hair fibre. When you do wash your hair, it pays to use a gentle moisturising shampoo. A typical household ingredient can actually make the ideal shampoo. That’s right, baking soda is incredibly gentle, and if you find it a bit weird using a powder in the shower, you can mix it to your shampoo and it will help to make your hair shiny and light as it helps to remove styling products used throughout the day. Another tip when rinsing your shampoo out, is to use lukewarm or cold water over hot water. Cool water actually helps to close the scales on your hair cuticles, sealing in the nutrition and giving your hair extra shine and smoothness.
Condition with Care
When it comes to hair care products, it is important to regularly use a conditioner or hair mask, especially after every washing. Keep in your bathroom a couple of versions, one that is a lighter conditioner and one that provides a deeper treatment, and you can alternate between them. With your hair mask, don’t skimp and buy the cheap ones. Slightly more expensive salon options will suit dry hair better, and you can leave these in your hair longer than the recommended time frames to help better condition your hair. One more tip to remember, you shouldn’t apply hair care products such as conditioners, masks, and treatments to soaking wet hair. Instead, wrap your hair in a towel for a few minutes before applying the hair treatment, so that it can penetrate the hair much easier. Keep in mind though, don’t towel dry the treatments in, as the rubbing can actually cause further damage to your hair.
