Be diagnosed with a qualifying condition

The first thing you need to do is find out if your condition will qualify you for medical marijuana. If the condition that you have falls into one of the following categories, then it is possible that, your doctor will recommend cannabis as treatment:

Cancer (Patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy) Spastic quadriplegia and intractable nausea or vomiting following chemotherapy treatment Glaucoma HIV/AIDS Tourette’s syndrome Autism Epilepsy Chronic, intractable pain Neuropathies, including neuropathy caused by spinal cord injury Parkinson’s disease Cachexia / wasting syndrome Multiple Sclerosis Crohn’s disease Persistent muscle spasms, including, but not limited to spasms associated with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Intractable nausea Seizures, including those characteristic of epilepsy

Be a Missouri resident and have a valid state ID or driver’s license

After finding out if your condition meets the list above, you need to be sure that you live in Missouri. Also, you should be able to present a valid ID or driver’s license from your state.

Get a prescription for medical marijuana from your doctor

Once you are sure that your condition is on the list of those allowed in Missouri and that you live in the state, then it’s time to see your doctor. You need to get written recommendation from your physician stating that you will benefit from using medical cannabis. When considering if you should use medical marijuana, make sure all conventional medicine and non-pharmaceutical measures have been tried first.

Have the written prescription in a sealed envelope or container. You will also need an original receipt of purchase such as a sales receipt or record from the dispensary where you purchased medical cannabis.

Find a licensed Missouri physician or clinic that can prescribe medical marijuana

There are only about 60 physicians and clinics out of 1,500 in Missouri who have been approved to prescribe medical marijuana. Make sure that the doctor has at least one year experience with your condition and that they are a specialist in your condition and/or care.

You can check here to see if there are clinics in Missouri that will be dispensing medical cannabis. It has not been made official yet but the state has given out a list of more than 100 doctors who are interested in prescribing medical marijuana. Once you have confirmed this with your doctor, then you should follow up with them.

Once you have the written prescription, then you can apply for a MMJ patient card. This is when your doctor needs to fill out an application form and register to legally administer cannabis in the state of Missouri. The next thing that they will do is take care of the application fee, which comes to $200.

The application hand over to the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). The Missouri DHSS will review your application. Then you will give a state ID card. 

You should know that your application may take up to 90 days to process. But the Department of Health and Senior Services.  They are working hard to get through the applications and issue the ID cards as soon as possible.

  • Grow or buy any amount of marijuana concentrates including hash oil, shatter and wax.
  • Use medical marijuana in edible form at home as well as purchase it from dispensaries or caregivers

The Department of Health and Senior Services has made sure that there are no restrictions on transporting medical cannabis in the state. This means that you can legally transport your medical marijuana from one place to another for any reason.
