Urinary incontinence might not seem as daunting as people spread rumours and irrelevant myths about it. Incontinence is the usual leakage of urine which is uncontrolled and involuntary in nature. Myth 1: Only old aged people suffer from incontinence

The risk of occurring incontinence is more prominent in old age but it does not mean that youth might not face it. 1 out of 3 women in the world faces incontinence from a very early age of about 18. Most common example of the loss of bladder control and leakage is after childbirth due to the labour pain that affects the pelvic floor muscles greatly. Most of the people think that incontinence is a disease and using incontinence pads and products is its only solution. However, it is not entirely true as incontinence is the symptom of some underlying medical conditions. If you face such consequences after some medical treatment, make sure to consult the doctor. It can be a symptom of some chronic diseases and early diagnosis can cure the issues before it’s too late.

Myth 3: It is embarrassing and hampers one’s daily enjoyment

Incontinence is a state of serious condition that affects the quality of life of a person. However, how you take it or react upon it is the deciding factor. One might feel embarrassed while using incontinence pads and products thinking that others might come to know about their problem. But regular pelvic floor exercises might reduce the occurrence of incontinence to a great extent. It strengthens the pelvic floor muscles that control the incontinence issue. Myth 4: Drink less water if a person has a weak bladder

In order to avoid the urge of urine excretion, most people generally avoid drinking water. However, this is not true. Undoubtedly, the more you drink water, urgency and frequency to urinate increases. But if you do not drink enough water, it can further increase the concentration level of the urine that consequently causes irritation in the urinary bladder. Apart from this, it even increases the odour of the urine which can persist even after using incontinence pads and products which highly affect the skin and health. Intake of water is essential and one should avoid concentrated beverages like tea, coffee etc to reduce the symptoms.

Myth 5: Incontinence usually affects women

Men too experiences incontinence issues. About 20 to 25 percent men in America face incontinence. Many even think that prostate surgery is the major cause of incontinence in men. This too is not applicable in many cases. After prostate gland surgery incontinence usually continues upto 5 months or so. If the condition persists beyond that, then the person might be experiencing incontinence from before the surgery itself.
