What exactly is Hajj?

Hajj, or pilgrimage in Arabic, is one of Islam’s five key elements and a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for each Muslim who can afford it. Beginning on the eighth day of Dhul Hajj, the Islamic calendar’s last month, millions of devout make the pilgrimage to Islam’s holy shrines in the cities of Makkah and Madinah.

What makes Hajj unique?

For observant Muslims, Hajj is the ultimate spiritual experience, a chance to start over and celebrate Islam’s spirit of togetherness. To remind pilgrims that they are all equal before God, they must all undertake the same rituals prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

When does Hajj begin? How much time does it take?

Hajj is set to begin on Dhul Hajj. The journey takes three days, but most pilgrims stay for a week to worship in Makkah and Madinah, the two holiest towns in Islam.

During the Hajj, what do pilgrims wear?

Men wear two sheets of white plain fabric to cover their upper and lower bodies for Hajj, same as they do for Umrah, while women must wear modest clothing that covers their bodies to the ankles and scarves to cover their hair. The garments are normally white, but there are no color restrictions.

What occurs during the Hajj?

Muslims conduct Umrah on the first day, which includes tawaf and Sai. The first is circumambulating the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest location, at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, which was built by the Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail. In the latter, pilgrims trek seven times between two hills in the masjid called Safa and Marwa. Muslims take a shuttle service to Mina, sacred place south-east of Makkah, after Umrah and stay there in tents overnight. Mina, commonly known as the Tent City, has a population of three million people.

Pilgrims proceed to Mount Arafat, five kilometers from Makkah, on the second day, where the Prophet Mohammed delivered his last sermon. Pilgrims spend the day in Arafat praying until dusk, then travel the seven kilometers to Muzdalifah, the third holy place. They pray there at sunset and at night, and they spend the night worshipping under the stars. The pilgrims gather pebbles on the third morning and return to Mina for the stoning ceremony. Between sunrise and dusk, they individually hurl seven pebbles at Jamrat Al Aqabah, a stone structure that represents Satan’s temptations.

The pilgrims’ three last acts are to sacrifice an animal to feed those in need by purchasing a voucher, cutting or shaving their hair, and returning to Makkah for another Umrah. Men prefer to shave their heads, while most women remove a few strands of hair.
