What exactly is Hajj?
Hajj, or pilgrimage in Arabic, is one of Islam’s five key elements and a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for each Muslim who can afford it. What occurs during the Hajj?
Muslims conduct Umrah on the first day, which includes tawaf and Sai. They pray there at sunset and at night, and they spend the night worshipping under the stars. The pilgrims gather pebbles on the third morning and return to Mina for the stoning ceremony. Between sunrise and dusk, they individually hurl seven pebbles at Jamrat Al Aqabah, a stone structure that represents Satan’s temptations.
The pilgrims’ three last acts are to sacrifice an animal to feed those in need by purchasing a voucher, cutting or shaving their hair, and returning to Makkah for another Umrah. Men prefer to shave their heads, while most women remove a few strands of hair.
